What's That Sound?

When you push the button, you expect your garage door to open (or close) gracefully. And when it doesn't, something's wrong.

We've put together a highly technical list of bangs, booms, poops, and eeeeeeks you might hear along with an idea of what those sounds might indicate so that when you call for help, you can sound like you know a little something about garage doors without putting on the vocal performance of a lifetime ("It sounded something like this...").

Here are the most common noises and what they might mean.

Squealing

Squealing is a good indication that your hinges need to be replaced, and although you can replace some hinges yourself, some are connected to important cables and should be handled by a professional. If you suspect your hinges need replacing, give us a call.

Grinding

Grinding and groaning is usually an indication of a misalignment somewhere, and the misalignment is usually the result of fasteners that have loosened or damaged panels (has anyone backed into the garage door lately?).

Rattling

Rattling means something is loose somewhere: either the brackets mounted to the ceiling of the garage, nuts and bolts throughout, or the garage door tracks. You can try to locate any loose nuts or bolt and gently tighten, but if that doesn't work we can find the culprit and take care of it.

Banging

If your garage door is dropping hard enough and fast enough to alert the neighbors, you could be dealing with a couple of common problems: a worn weather strip or faulty springs. Keep in mind that an abrupt drop to the ground can cause safety issues and get this problem checked out as soon as possible.

We hope this guide to the blood-curdling noises your garage door makes helps you solve problems and get help next time you need it. For the latter, call us at Overhead Door Permian Basin(TM) today - we love to diagnose and treat squeaky, screechy, bangy, clangy doors.
