New Year, New Door

Posted by Overhead Door Permian Basin on Mon, Dec 21, 2015 @ 08:00 AM

Have you begun your list of 2016 resolutions? Is one of them home improvement? If so, you should most definitely consider a new garage door. According to a 2015 Cost VS. Value Remodeling Magazine survey, the average cost to a replace a mid-range door with an upscale door to be $2,944, and found a $2,429 value of the project at home sale, which equates to an 82.5% return. This makes garage door replacement the second-best remodeling project in terms of return on investment (ROI) in the upscale home improvement category. However, for many people, the idea of replacing a garage door is daunting. It’s a big purchase that can make a big impact on the look and character of the home. How do you choose your next garage door?

When it comes to choosing a garage door, there are more choices than you may realize, especially when factoring in materials (steel, vinyl, wood), styles (modern, traditional, carriage house), energy efficiency (insulated or non-insulated), options (windows, decorative hardware) and colors. To make sense of it all and find the garage door system that best fits your home’s architecture, follow these five steps:

1. Understand Your Options

Taking the time to research your options online is the best place to start. Our website and even social interest sites like Pinterest are good places to get ideas.

2. Determine Your Door Materials

One of the most important factors to consider is door material. All doors are not created equal, and each material used in construction has its own pros and cons. For example, while a steel garage door will last a long time, it can also be dented, something to keep in mind if your kids play ball in the driveway. Wood doors are beautiful, incredibly strong and can be custom designed to perfectly complement your home’s architectural style, but they require routine maintenance and can be more expensive than other garage doors on the market. And, if you live in an area subject to strong winds, you’ll want to consider doors with high windload ratings.

3. To insulate or not to insulate?

If your garage is adjacent to any kind of living space, such as a bedroom or living room, it’s a good idea to choose an insulated garage door; it may help to keep those rooms more comfortable, especially if you live in a climate with extreme winter or summer temperatures. Not only that, insulated doors tend to have quieter operation, a significant plus if a bedroom is located next to or above the garage. Do you have a detached garage? If so, a non-insulated door will probably do just fine as long as you’re not in a region with extreme winter temperatures or there is nothing stored in your garage that could be damaged by freezing such as paint and caulk.

4. Try on some doors!

The fun starts after you’ve determined the basics of what you want in a new garage door. When visiting our website, you’ll find styles ranging from utilitarian to ornate, carriage-house to modern. Spend time on our DoorView Design Center. This center allows you to upload a photo go our house then you can place many kinds of doors onto your home until you find the one you like.

Protect Your Home From Break-Ins This Holiday Season

Posted by Overhead Door Permian Basin on Tue, Dec 15, 2015 @ 01:16 PM

Gifts_xmas.jpgUnfortunately, there seems to be more garage break-ins this time of year. Burglars are aware that you may have Christmas gifts in your car or in the garage (hiding from your nosey kiddos!). In addition to knowing you have these valuable gifts, burglars also know that you are likely to go out of town this time of year…leaving an empty house for them to rob. Can you guess the easiest point of entry? Yep, it's typically the garage. Find out how to protect your home from break-ins this holiday season!

Bring Your Opener Inside!

Something you may not think to do is take your garage door opener inside! If the vehicle that you leave at home while you are either inside your home or on vacation has your garage door opener on your visor, take it inside. If you have someone trying to break into your car, they might be smart enough to see your opener and then have access to your home. This is something to implement all through the year, not just the holiday season.

Know Who Has Your Keypad Code

You should never give your code out to anyone that you do not trust. If your house is being built and the contractor has the code to your garage, he may give it to another one of his employees. Now there are 2 people (you have no idea who they are, where they live, or what they do outside of work) who have access to your home. One helpful tip from us is to change your code as soon as you move into your home!

Change Your Code

Another helpful tip that goes along with your keypad code is changing your code every 6 months. This not only protects your home from burglaries, but it can also keep anyone who has your code (and don’t want in your home) OUT. Some situations come up where that is they only option that you have… to give someone your garage code. But, it is a safety precaution to change your code every 6 months.

At Overhead Door, we sincerely hope that your home stays safe and comfortable through the holiday season. However, always be aware of dangerous situations and take the precautions necessary to protect your home and valuable possessions.

How To Use Your Garage This Christmas

Posted by Overhead Door Permian Basin on Tue, Dec 08, 2015 @ 11:35 AM

Let's face it. We all wish we had more storage space! Especially during the holidays, when we are collecting new things (and don't always get rid of the old!) it is easy to say "where do I put this?!"

Why not use that garage of yours for extra space? Genius.2713076677_ec190d5b48_o.jpg

Your garage is a great space to store everything from holiday decorations to gardening supplies. However, that can make things a little crowded! First, take the time to organize your garage. The walls and ceiling are a great place to add hooks and nails to hang and store off the ground. Place your other garage items in color-coded bins. If you can't find enough colors, just be sure each bin is clearly labeled according to the contents inside.

While you're at it, why not clear out your closets and transfer what you can to the garage? By doing so, you are giving your guests a perfectly clean closet to stash their travel bags. Even if it's just temporarily, utilize the bin tip (above) or clear a corner of the garage specifically for temporary storage.

If the weather permits, your garage can be a great place to have Christmas dinner or New Years Eve party! By organizing your garage supplies and pulling out the cars, your garage can now become an extra room. Cover your storage areas with room dividers or curtains for a cleaner look. Add a long decorated table with chairs and some extra lighting to take it to the next level.

See? Your garage can be used for more than just parking your cars! If you have another idea you'd like to share, we'd love to hear it! Just comment below!

And don't forget, Overhead Door is your answer to any and every garage door need. You can give us a call or contact us online to schedule service or a design consultation!

The survey makes an annual comparison of popular home renovation projects, and breaks down the results for consumers and homeowners.

According to the survey, the average cost to a replace a mid-range door with an upscale door to be $2,944, and found a $2,429 value of the project at home sale, which equates to an 82.5% return.
